Content Area Examples1. Literacy: Begin by handing out the worksheet above. Instruct students to find an independent working spot where they can take their book and fill in the Ask, Read, and Tell portions of the worksheet. Once students have accomplished this step then direct them to find a partner and discuss the book that they read, and the questions that they asked and answered.
2. Mathematics: As a homework assignment, students are assigned a chapter to read in their math textbooks. The students will be given the worksheet above and instructed to fill out at home. The next class period the students will then meet up with a partner to discuss the chapter and the two questions they had before reading and what the answers are to the questions. 3. Science: Students will be assigned to read through a science article in class. Students will be given the ART worksheet and will independently fill it in before, during, and after reading the article. Once the article is finished, students then will partner up and discuss the article and their ART sheet. 4. Health: To help gain a better understanding of their health textbook, students will fill in the ART worksheet as before, during, and after each chapter. This assignment will be accomplished at home as a homework assignment. At the beginning of the students next class period they will meet up with a partner to discuss what the chapter is about and the questions that were asked and answered. *This strategy can be just as helpful to special education students as to general education students. The thing that is good about this strategy is that it is laid out and a clear step-by-step process for the students. For some special education or even general education students the directions may need read to the student or switched so they are able to read and understand them on their own. This is an activity that can be taught through scaffolding. The teacher could demonstrate how to do them with the students until they are all able to do it independently on their own. This scaffolding will be helpful for special education students since they will receive that repetition of the directions until they have full been able to do it independently. |
