Example 1
In the area of reading, this strategy can be used to prompt a student to read independently. First you would say, "please go get your book and start reading to yourself." After waiting five seconds for the student to comply, the teacher would then say, "I need you to go get your book and start reading to yourself right now." If after five seconds the student has not complied, the teacher needs to then deliver a consequence to the student based on their non-compliance to listen and heed the teachers requests.
Example 3
In the area of science, this strategy can be used to prompt a student to follow along during an experiment if they aren't paying attention or goofing off. First, the teacher would ask him/her to participate using the word please. After waiting five seconds for the student to comply, the teacher would then repeat the request using the words, "I need you to." If after another five seconds the student has still not complied, the teacher needs to then deliver a consequence to the student based on their non-compliance.

Example 2
The strategy of precision requests can also be used in the content area of social studies as the teacher is going through a power point that has the answers to the student's fill-in-the-blank worksheet. First off, the teacher would request the student to pay attention starting with the word please. After five seconds of waiting for compliance, the teacher should repeat the request with the words "I need you to..." If the student still fails to comply with an additional five seconds, the teacher should state the consequence and follow through on it.
Example 4Finally, another content area example of using this strategy could be in mathematics when the student isn't doing the work required of them. First the teacher would say, "please..." followed by their request of the student. After waiting five seconds for the student to comply, the teacher would then say, "I need you to...(request)." If after five seconds the student has still not complied, the teacher needs to then deliver a consequence to the student based on their non-compliance.

This flow chart represents in an easy too understand way the steps to take when making precision requests whether the student complies or exhibits noncompliance.

This video is just a quick demonstration of using precision requests with a student. While it doesn't show all of the steps to go through if a student does not immediately comply as the student in this video does, it is still a good example of this strategy. It represents what we want all of our students to always do when we make requests, and what our response should be when they do.
