Example 1One way the cooperative learning strategy could be adapted and used in the mathematics content area is in a measuring lesson. After introducing students to the concept of measuring and providing examples of how measuring works and why it is used, the teacher could form small groups and give each group the task of measuring and recording the length and width of common classroom objects. After measuring a number of objects, the students could engage in a discussion of how the measurements allow them to compare different objects.
Example 3
A third way this strategy could be adapted and used is in the area of science. Many science experiments could easily be altered to be performed by a small group of students who could work together to develop and test a hypothesis. For instance, the students could be looking at the impact of using cold or warm water to create instant snow. By working together, their learning and understanding of the scientific process as well as instant snow, would be increased/enhanced.

Example 2
A second example of the cooperative learning strategy being adapted and used is in a history project. The students could be assigned the task of researching and then presenting a historical event to the rest of the class. They could each have specific roles which would promote positive interdependence, individual accountability, and interpersonal communication skills.
Example 4
Another example of this strategy in use could be in the content area of writing. The teacher would provide each small group of students with a creative writing prompt that they had to write a realistic fiction story for. They could first write a rough draft and then edit it together before scripting their final draft. This would promote the student's collaboration and also increase their creativity as they can build off of each others ideas. It would also help the students who are struggling with proper sentence construction in English because they would receive subtle reinforcement and feedback from their peers.

This picture is a great poster of rules for cooperative learning group work. When introduced and modeled by the teacher before cooperative learning activities are introduced, would ensure that the students understood what is expected of them.

This picture displays the five main components of the cooperative learning strategy which all work together to increase student learning and engagement. If one of the five isn't present, the small group is not as successful at learning.
